How Do You Find Out Which Ipad You Have
Not sure which iPad model you have? Apple has released many editions and revisions of the iPad since its initial launch in 2010, but there's no clear labeling to show which you have.
While anyone can tell an iPad Pro from an iPad Mini by the size, we're here to guide you through the specifics of every iPad model. You'll find tips to identify each iPad listed below, broken up by type.
Some iPad Model Basics
The most reliable way to identify your iPad is by the model number on the device. On the bottom of the back panel below iPad, you'll see the following:

That Model text tells you what iPad you have, including whether it's a Wi-Fi only or Wi-Fi and cellular tablet. You can also confirm you have a model with cellular support if it has a SIM card slot on one side.
But in case you don't want to remove your iPad's case or that text is illegible, we'll include other characteristics of each iPad. We've also included the latest version of iOS available for each iPad (at the time of writing) in case that helps you confirm. You can check your iPad's iOS version at Settings > General > About > Version.

The Different iPad Models
The standard iPad serves as a solid all-around model with a 9.7-inch screen. Let's walk through them from newest to oldest.
iPad (6th Generation)
Model number: A1893 (Wi-Fi) | A1954 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
Released in 2018, this is the iPad that Apple currently offers. It features a Retina screen, a Touch ID-enabled Home button, and works with the Apple Pencil.
iPad (5th Generation)
Model number: A1822 (Wi-Fi) | A1823 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The 2017 iPad model is almost identical to the 2018 version. In fact, it's so similar that the only major difference aside from model number is the lack of Apple Pencil support.
iPad (4th Generation)
Model number: A1458 (Wi-Fi) | A1459 or A1460 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 10.3.3
The next oldest iPad goes back quite a bit, as it launched in late 2012. It features a modern Lightning port, a Retina display, and comes in white or black colors. The Home button lacks Touch ID support, distinguishing it from newer models.
iPad (3rd Generation)
Model number: A1416 (Wi-Fi) | A1430 or A1403 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 9.3.5
The third iPad model, originally known as "the new iPad", is the shortest-lived iOS device ever. It launched in March 2012 and was replaced in October 2012 by the fourth generation.
Compared to the fourth generation, you can identify an iPad 3 by the older 30-pin connector at the bottom. This is much wider than than the modern Lightning port.
iPad 2
Model number: A1395 (Wi-Fi) | A1396 or A1397 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 9.3.5
The first sequel to the iPad released in 2011. This model was available in white or black, has the old 30-pin connector, and features cameras on the front and back.
iPad (1st Generation)
Model number: A1219 (Wi-Fi) | A1337 or A1397 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 5.1.1
The first iPad, launched in 2010, is easy to identify. It doesn't have any cameras.
The Different iPad Mini Models
The iPad Mini line features a smaller 7.9-inch screen instead of the 9.7-inch screens seen on standard models.
iPad Mini 4
Model number: A1538 (Wi-Fi) | A1550 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The newest iPad Mini launched in late 2015, but Apple still sells the 128GB version. It's available in silver, space gray, and gold colors. Like other newer iPads, it has a Touch ID home button and a Lightning connector. On the cellular model, you'll find the SIM tray on the right side.
Unlike the iPad Mini 3, the Mini 4 was available in a 32GB version.
iPad Mini 3
Model number: A1599 (Wi-Fi) | A1600 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The iPad Mini 3, released a year earlier in 2014, is quite similar to the later model. The only major difference is that the cellular-enabled version of this model has the SIM tray on the left side instead of the right.
iPad Mini 2
Model number: A1489 (Wi-Fi) | A1490 or A1491 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
2013's iPad Mini 2 was the smaller iPad's first revision. This model didn't feature gold coloring as an option, and also lacks the Touch ID home button compared to newer models.
iPad Mini
Model number: A1432 (Wi-Fi) | A1454 or A1455 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 9.3.5
The first iPad Mini, released in late 2012, lacks a Retina display. It's also the only iPad Mini without a 128GB storage option.
The Different iPad Air Models
The iPad Air was a short-lived iPad line. It served as the "standard" iPad between the 4th-generation iPad and the 2017 model. The two iPad air models featured a lighter design compared to earlier devices, but with the same 9.7-inch screen size.
iPad Air 2
Model number: A1566 (Wi-Fi) | A1567 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The second iPad Air released in late 2014. It packs a Retina display and silver, space gray, or gold coloring. This model also has a Touch ID Home button.
iPad Air
Model number: A1474 (Wi-Fi) | A1475 or A1476 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The original iPad Air is similar to its successor. As it still has a Lightning connector, the biggest visible difference is that this model does not support Touch ID.
The Different iPad Pro Models
Apple focuses the iPad Pro model on creative types and others who want to use an iPad to get work done (though you can use your regular iPad for work too). Though there are only a few iterations so far, they come in several different sizes, which is an easy way to distinguish them.
An easy way to identify that you have an iPad Pro is by its four speakers. You'll find two speaker grills on the top of the device and two at the bottom on every Pro model.
At the time of writing, Apple has just announced two new iPad Pro models (one 12.9 inches, the other 11 inches). Because they haven't released yet, the model numbers aren't public. However, you can identify them by their edge-to-edge screens.
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd Generation)
Model number: A1670 (Wi-Fi) | A1671 or A1821 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
Released in 2017, this is the revised edition of Apple's largest iPad. It comes in up to 512GB of storage and has Touch ID support in the Home button. You'll also see a Smart Connector surface (three magnetic dots) on its left side.
iPad Pro (10.5-inch)
Model number: A1701 (Wi-Fi) | A1709 or A1852 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
Apple's other 2017 iPad Pro is a bit smaller, but packs a similar setup to the 12.9-inch model. Unlike its larger sibling, this one comes in rose gold coloring. We've taken a look at this iPad Pro if you're interested in more.
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st Generation)
Model number: A1584 (Wi-Fi) | A1652 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The first iPad Pro released in 2015. It's the same size as the 2017 model and thus difficult to tell apart. Aside from the model number, the best way to identify yours is by storage size. The 2017 model is available in 64, 256, and 512GB sizes, while the 2015 edition comes in 32, 128, and 256GB flavors.
iPad Pro (9.7-inch)
Model number: A1673 (Wi-Fi) | A1674 or A1675 (Wi-Fi and cellular)
Latest iOS version: iOS 12.1 (Current)
The smallest iPad Pro only lasted for one generation. It launched in 2016 and is available in rose gold along with the other standard colors.
